HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A number of residents of the western province of Herat have complained about what they call the high price but low quality of internet service.
They claim that the services provided by the telecom companies in the province are not only poor but also expensive at the same time.
They resent paying money to telecom companies for internet service or useless activation packages because the internet speed is annoyingly slow. The problem continues to generate a number of complaints, which have not yet been addressed.
Speaking to Pajhwok Afghan News, resident Naqibullah Haqmal said he had been using internet services for years, but his packages did not work as they were sold to customers of telecom firms.
Haqmal commented: “What telecom companies sell us in the name of 4G package only works at the speed of 3G or 2G packages.”
He asked the relevant authorities to rationalize the price of internet services, keeping in mind its continuous slow clip.
Sanaullah, another internet user, said he was frustrated by the poor quality of service and the exorbitant cost.
“We want the Afghanistan Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (ATRA) to pay serious attention to speed and quality,” he added.
According to Sanaullah, since the number of internet subscribers is quite high, service providers should increase its speed. Today, he noted, the Internet had a significant impact on businesses.
Regarding the growing complaints of subscribers, telecom officials say there are many reasons for slow internet speed.
IT technician Gul Mohammad Paiman told Pajhwok that there could be a number of reasons for slow internet speed.
He listed inferior parts of mobile devices, congested Wi-Fi lines, inappropriate router locations, simultaneous use of several programs, use of filter switches, etc. as some of the factors.
Paiman stressed: “We need to know how to use internet services properly and we need to expect the right level of services from the service provider via SIM cards or Wi-Fi.”
However, ATRA officials acknowledged the issue of slow internet speed, saying that efforts are being made to address the problem.
ATRA West Zone Director Maulvi Baz Mohammad Sarwari confirmed receiving a number of complaints about the price and quality of internet. The authority had taken necessary measures to reach the complaints, he said.
“To ensure the provision of the best services, all service delivery centers in Herat were monitored four times a year. If any problem is noticed, we report it to the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology (MoTIT) and follow up with the service provider.”
Such measures were taken last year as well and Roshan Telecommunication Company was asked to activate 30 new service locations in Herat city, which played an effective role in improving telecom services, explained Sarwari.
In addition to telecommunications companies, dozens of other Internet service providers operate in the province.
